Opera Projects

Cooperation

In 2001, the Faculties of Music and of Art and Design launched the Interdisciplinary Opera Project at the University of the Arts. The project has staged annual performances at different venues since then. In 2006, Professor Kai Lehmann took over as art director. The Opera Project creates opportunities for undergraduates in vocal studies to perform under professional conditions and under academic supervision, while students in art and design start out by developing the artistic concept of a play in close dialogue with their director. Professional advisers then teach technical skills and point to design choices during workshops on costumes, make-up, props, video and set design. Initial design concepts are created by the team and then are introduced to the singers and the director, before being produced in our shops. While the costumes are being fitted, performers develop their roles in a continuing process. Rehearsals finetune the play´s impact on the audience. Close cooperation is necessary to fuse music, lyrics and set into an unified, aesthetic experience. But the exchanges facilitated by these performances also deepen the mutual understanding and appreciation between the participating faculties.
